Fair
Labor Certified Apparel Line
Spring 2010
Maggie’s Organics is proud to announce that
we have become the first apparel company ever
to be Certified
Fair Labor under a rigorous new auditing
process: Fair Labor Practices and Community
Benefits certification by Scientific Certification
Systems. |
 |
Every
stage of our Central American cotton production
chain has been certified to this new standard– the
growers, cotton gin, spinner, knitter, dyer, cutter,
sewer, screen-printer, as well as our office and
warehouses at Maggie’s.
The certification validates socially responsible
practices both in agricultural production and all
stages of the post-harvest production process. Certification
to this standard covers: equitable hiring and employment,
safe workplace conditions, worker and family access
to health, education, and transportation services,
local and regional impacts, community engagement,
and demonstrated economic stability. Find out more
about the audit process at: www.scscertified.com/fff/fair_labor_practices.php.
Our New Spring Apparel line is the first group of
products to be launched since we received this certification,
and our Scarf line will be included as we sell through
current inventory. Each product made by this certified
chain will be clearly marked with a Fair Labor Practices
hang-tag, as well as with a label printed in the
neckline of each garment.
In addition our audits with SCS’s Fair Labor Certification,
we are also working on a pilot project for Fair
Trade certification with TransFair USA, and expect
to be producing products under this pilot certification
later this year.
Since our inception in 1992, we have worked hard
to ensure fair treatment and wages by all workers
involved in our supply chain. Many of the companies
and cooperatives that have been or will be certified
to these standards have been our partners for years.
Having our efforts validated by independent auditors
is bringing us all a sense of pride that we are
doing the right things, and is helping us to improve.
In an effort to provide transparency to our stakeholders,
and to help our customers get to know our suppliers,
we have put together this working document. It will
continue to expand and change as our certification
expands and changes.
The following is a list of all partners involved
in this production chain for 2010, and the role
they play in the production of our Certified Fair
Labor garments. This list will expand in the future,
and we are happy to report that we have already
being contacted by other brands who are also interested
in producing fair labor products through this supply
chain.
